Course Description: Working with an expanded arsenal of drawing methods and materials. participants will discover the limitless potential of drawing to develop the critical thinking and abilities necessary for the creation of works that stretch the definition of traditional drawing.

 

Course Outcomes:

  • Participants will develop creative ways to express themselves through experimentation.
  • Participants will develop an increased awareness of what constitutes drawing today.
  • Participants will develop the ability to evaluate their work and the work of others.
  • Participants will develop a vocabulary of terms related to the practice of drawing.

Saturday, Nov. 16th

12:00-12:30 Introduction/orientation

12:30-1:30 Warm-up exercises

1:30-2:30 Drawing with your non-dominate hand

2:30-4:30 Expanded drawing from a collage

4:30-5:00 Clean up and next day’s assignment

 

Sunday, Nov. 17th

12:00-2:00 Making handmade drawing tools

2:00-4:00 Expanded drawing with handmade tools

4:00-5:00 Critique and clean up

Instructor Bio:

A Hub City native, David Shurbutt is a graduate of The University of South Carolina Columbia where he earned a BA in Studio Art and a MA in Media Art. After a career as a museum exhibit and graphic designer, he enrolled in the three year Master of Fine Arts in Studio (MFAST) low residency graduate program at The Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD receiving his MFA in Studio Art in 2017. David has a multidisciplinary practice and a body of work in drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, performance, and video. He has exhibited primarily in the Southeast, but also in the Mid-Atlantic, West Coast, and Mid-West. David’s eclectic work is dedicated to the memory of his son Kai and reflects his interest in paleoanthropology, Jungian psychology, science fiction, and deep ecology.

cancellation policy

If we do not meet minimum registration, class will be cancelled and students will be given a full refund. If registration occurred through our website, refunds will be issued through Stripe minus a small administration fee. Otherwise, a check will be mailed to you in approximately two weeks. ​If a student has to withdraw from a class five or more working days before the class is scheduled to begin, a refund will be issued minus a SAM $20 administrative fee. If a student withdraws from a class five working days or less before a class is scheduled to begin, the class fee will not be refunded.
